PG Training Programmes in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka
In Sri Lanka the MD in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery degree is a five year postgraduate course conducted by the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine (www.cmb.aclk/pgim) University of Colombo for trainees who wish to obtain board certification as a specialist. This programme is open to foreign candidates as well. It is mandatory for the practicing specialist OMF surgeons to take part in postgraduate training programmes in order to keep abreast with the recent development in this fast growing field of OMF surgery. The first author is presently undergoing a certificate course in OMF Surgery in Sri Lanka.
The Faculty of Dental Sciences in University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka blessed by the Japanese Overseas Development (JICA ODA) grant aid since 1998 and has established a modern Dental (Teaching) Hospital. The Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) Department has a 40 bed indoor ward, 3 bed ICU and twin operation theatres with facilities for micro-vascular surgery. Presently there is a 6 member team of consultant grade academic staff which includes one professor emeritus, one full professor and four senior lecturers. The staff performs advanced OMS procedures such as Oral Cancer ablation and reconstruction (pedicle and microvascular free flaps) and Cleft Lip & Palate Surgery.
The Department is being recognized by IAOMS as a centre for excellence for OMS training with the help of JSOMS where it conducted short term international training programmes in OMS before the conflict situation in the country. Since the country is now recovering fast during the post war era and is experiencing the most conducive environment for international training programmes. Foreign doctors should have obtain necessary resident visa and temporary registration at the Sri Lanka Medical Council.

For Practicing OM Surgeons and PG trainees (local and overseas):
Certificate Courses in Surgical Treatment of Oral Cancer, Basic Microsurgery, Cleft Lip & Palate, Orthognathic Surgery.
These certificate courses are aimed for practicing surgeons to update the knowledge and practical skill in the management of common OMF surgery procedures. Training content include: anatomical sessions and hospital sessions in ward, clinic and Operation Theatre with hands-on-training. Duration of the courses range from 6 months to 9 months depending on the training requirements.
For Junior Dental graduates (local and overseas): Certificate course in Minor Oral Surgery and M Sc programmes in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
These certificate courses are designed for BDS graduates to obtain hands-on-training on minor oral surgery procedures. The MSc programmes consists of one year of taught plus one year by research on an OMFS topic.
